OGDEN, Utah (AP) — A new Utah law aimed at stopping the destruction of guns seized by police is making it easier to sell the firearms instead.
The Standard-Examiner in Ogden reported Monday the law requires the state to contract with a licensed gun dealer to accept weapons from police and re-sell them on the open market.
The proceeds will go to nonprofit groups that help the families of fallen police officers.
Republican Rep. Brad Daw of Orem says he sponsored the measure because he thought it was silly that police were destroying functional firearms. Many departments ended up destroying the weapons because the process of selling them was complicated.
Under the new law, police can only destroy a gun if its condition prevents it from being sold or if it's associated with a notorious crime.
