SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Reporter Lindsay Whitehurst has been hired to cover law enforcement for The Associated Press in Utah.
The appointment was announced Thursday by West Region Editor Traci Carl, who oversees news for 13 states.
Whitehurst, 31, joins the AP from The Salt Lake Tribune, where she has worked as a reporter since 2008 covering a range of stories, including those on crime, courts and polygamy. During her 10-year newspaper career, she covered the sexual assault trial in Texas of polygamist leader Warren Jeffs and a 2010 narrative about the failed attempt to rescue a man trapped in a Utah cave. Her stories have been honored by the Utah Press Association and the Society of Professional Journalists, among others.
Most recently she covered higher education issues in Utah.
"Lindsay is a great source reporter with a passion for strong storytelling," Carl said. "We are excited to have her join our team in Utah."
In her new role in AP's Salt Lake City bureau, Whitehurst will cover criminal justice issues at the federal, state and county level, including breaking news and courts. She is scheduled to begin Aug. 4.
Previously, she worked as a reporter at The Daily Times in Farmington, New Mexico, and began her career at The Herald Bulletin in Anderson, Indiana.
Whitehurst is a graduate of Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where she earned a bachelor's degree in English/Journalism and American Studies.
Whitehurst, a native of Lake Villa, Illinois, is married and has a baby daughter.
