WEST VALLEY CITY — Police have identified three people who were arrested in connection with a shooting that left one man with injuries to the buttocks on Thursday in West Valley City.

Anei Joker, 18, Awad M. Majok, 18 and Rocschida Virginia Mims, 46, all were arrested Thursday and booked into the Salt Lake County Jail, according to West Valley City police spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku and arrest reports.

Joker was arrested for investigation of failing to stop at police command, violating traffic signals and not possessing a valid driver’s license. Majok was arrested for investigation of rioting. Mims was arrested for investigation of rioting and obstructing justice.

At least two other people were involved in the shooting: The man who was injured and the gunman, whom police have so far described only as a black man in his early 20s who was wearing a red sweatshirt. The man who was injured was not identified.

The shooter remains at-large as of Friday, according to Vainuku. The man who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital, police said, but it was not clear Friday whether he was still in the hospital, in police custody or released.

The incident began about 10 a.m. Thursday with an argument outside an apartment unit near 2500 S. Lakecrest Drive, according to West Valley City police.

Witnesses told police that a man was in the front yard of the apartment and was arguing with four men in a black BMW, authorities said. An arrest report alleges that the man, along with his mother and several others, started a physical fight with another group of people that ended with shots being fired. Witnesses told police that the mother was thought to have “brought a police-style nightstick to the fight,” according to the report. It is not known if that weapon was used, the report states.

An arrest report identifies the man police believe to be the shooter as “L.E.”

When questioned by police, the mother initially insisted that she did not have a son named “L.E.," according to the report. She later said that was her son’s name, but he was not in Utah. Police determined that information to be false, according to the report.

Mims is thought to be the mother of the man police identified as the shooter, an arrest report states.

The front passenger in the BMW suffered a gunshot wound to the buttocks, and the car also left the scene, police said. Shortly after, an officer located a car matching the description of the car they believed was involved in the shooting and attempted to pull it over, but the car fled.

The driver of the vehicle allegedly evaded the officer trying to stop the car, ran two red lights and weaved in and out of traffic during the chase, according to an arrest report. It ended near 1800 S. Redwood Road when the car blew a tire, police said.

Police reported Thursday that the three uninjured people in the car were taken to a police station for questioning.

What led to the altercation remains unclear. Police also have not disclosed the relationship between the shooter and the people in the BMW.

Arrest reports indicate that Joker was driving the car, and Majok was a passenger, according to police.

Officers also were unable to find records of a valid driver’s license for Joker, according to the report.
