BOUNTIFUL — Police on Friday arrested a man they say attempted to rob a 7-Eleven in Bountiful, then led officers on a chase before entering the freeway going the wrong way on Thursday.
About 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, a man pulled out a gun and demanded money from the clerk at a 7-Eleven convenience store located at 1109 W. 500 South, according to West Bountiful Police Chief Todd Hixson.
Instead of handing over the money, the clerk walked away, and the man attempted to break into the cash register himself, according to Hixson. When the man was unable to get it open, he left the store and jumped into a red Subaru WRX with Utah license plate No. Z819A, Hixson said.
A witness at the convenience store called police while following the man's vehicle, and multiple agencies soon responded, according to Hixson. Police attempted to conduct a traffic stop on his car, but it soon turned into a pursuit.
Police ended the chase when the man entered the freeway and headed in the wrong direction, Hixson said.
“It just wasn’t reasonable to continue to pursue given the dangers involved,” he added.
The man soon turned around and exited the freeway again, according to Hixson. Officers in the area recognized and identified him as he drove away.
On Friday evening, Douglas Luna, 48, was taken into custody, Hixson confirmed.
Adult Probation and Parole and the Violent Fugitive Apprehension Strike Team assisted in the search for Luna.
