KAYSVILLE — After a Saturday morning crash left about half of Kaysville City without power, crews were repairing lines Sunday morning and city officials said power was restored by noon.

A driver crashed into a power pole on 200 North near the interstate exit at about 4 a.m. Saturday, resulting in a temporary freeway closure and loss of power, Kaysville City Mayor Steve Hiatt said.

Some workers had been working nonstop since 4 a.m. Saturday to restore power, Hiatt said in a Facebook post Sunday morning. By about 8:45 a.m. Sunday, workers had connected power lines and restored electricity for most of the residents and businesses, he said.

Power crews still had to repair one other connection that would restore electricity for people on the southeast side of the city near Davis High School, the mayor said. He expected that connection to be completed by about 9:30 a.m.

“We are really, really close,” Hiatt said in a Facebook Live video posted to the city’s page on Sunday morning.

In Facebook posts on Saturday, Hiatt said the driver, Jason Philip Exley, 26, was headed north on I-15 when he took the exit for 200 North. After exiting, Exley apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck the power pole nearby, the mayor said.

I-15 was closed for some time on Saturday morning as crews cleared the downed lines off the freeway. Exit 328 and 200 North on either side of the freeway were also closed for several hours Saturday.

The interstate was again shut down for several hours overnight as utility workers repaired power lines over I-15.

Kaysville’s Veteran's Day program was canceled on Saturday due to the power outage affecting Davis High School. A Mountain America Credit Union building also received damage after power lines whipped the windows of the building, Hiatt said.

Alcohol might have been a factor in the crash, Hiatt said. Exley was arrested Saturday for investigation of DUI and reckless driving. He was taken to a local hospital after the crash, but later was released and booked into jail.

In an unrelated incident Sunday at about 1:30 a.m., a driver crashed west of I-15 in Lehi and hit a power pole, according to Lehi Police Sgt. Chad Ray. About 30 Rocky Mountain Power customers were left without electricity, and police were still looking for the driver as of 7 a.m., according to Ray.
