SCIPIO — A Boy Scout leader was killed and several boy scouts were injured after the SUV they were in rolled on I-15 Saturday afternoon.

Two Boy Scout leaders were traveling with five Scouts in a 2005 Ford Excursion pulling a 34-foot camp trailer on northbound I-15. At 12:27 p.m., about a quarter of a mile north of the Juab-Millard County line at mile marker 194, the trailer being towed began to sway causing the Excursion to leave the roadway and travel onto the median, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.

The trailer detached from the SUV and rolled onto its right side. The Excursion rolled multiple times and one of the Scouts who was not wearing a seat belt was ejected. He suffered minor injuries, UHP said.

The 78-year-old driver received significant injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. He was wearing a seat belt, UHP confirmed.

The other Scout leader received neck injuries and was flown to a nearby hospital by a medical helicopter. Officials said the other Scouts were all wearing seat belts and suffered minor injuries but were all taken by ambulance to local hospitals as a precaution.

Officials have not released the deceased victim’s name pending family notification.
