SALT LAKE CITY — A drug deal gone bad resulted in two people being stabbed and a man arrested after police say he took two children with him as he tried to buy drugs and then sped away from the scene.

About 9:30 p.m. Sunday, Jovonie Anthony Cabrera, 24, tried to make a drug deal near 200 South and Rio Grande Street, according to a Salt Lake County Jail report.

Cabrera claimed another man refused to give him $20 worth of Spice and then punched him in the face, the report states. Police say Cabrera responded by stabbing the man in the stomach.

Others in the area tried to hold Cabrera until officers arrived and he was punched in the face again. Cabrera responded by stabbing a second man in the stomach, the report states. Both victims were taken to local hospitals in serious condition.

Cabrera fled the scene in a black Impala. Two children, ages 5 and 6, were also in the car, according to the report. Cabrera nearly hit several other vehicles while trying to get away, police said.

Salt Lake police stopped Cabrera near 400 South and 1000 West and arrested him for investigation of two counts of aggravated assault and drug possession.

Cabrera was convicted in 2013 of possession of drug paraphernalia. He was sentenced to probation, but his case is still active as he has had his probation reinstated after failing drug tests, according to court records. A warrant for his arrest was issued July 7 when he failed to show up for a mandatory court hearing.
