PROVO — A Mexican man being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Utah died Saturday.
Santiago Sierra-Sanchez, 38, had been booked into Salt Lake County Jail on unspecified charges and was transferred to ICE detention at the Utah County Jail on Friday when he was identified as having been previously deported, according to a news release issued Monday.
Upon arrival, Sierra-Sanchez was screened by Utah County Jail medical officials and placed under observation when he complained of back pain, the release states. Jail officials said he did not report any other conditions.
Jail officials found Sierra-Sanchez unresponsive in the jail's medical unit early Saturday. He was taken to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, where he was declared dead about 4:20 a.m.
The state medical examiner is reviewing the cause of death.
ICE is working with Mexican consular officials to notify Sierra-Sanchez's relatives in Mexico.
