TOOELE — Police have confirmed that 5-year-old Giacomo Riley Kelly was hit and killed during an auto-pedestrian accident Friday afternoon.
Giacomo was riding his bicycle near 680 West McKeller Street in Tooele around 1:45 p.m., according to Tooele police. Police said that children in the neighborhood would often follow the garbage truck while riding their bikes.
"It's my understanding they (neighborhood kids) have a pretty good rapport with the garbage truck driver. They wave to him. It's not too uncommon for them to do this routine," said Tooele Police Captain Paul Wimmer.
Wimmer said Giacomo and his sister were riding their bicycles on the sidewalk parallel to the garbage truck. The truck turned right at an intersection and the boy continued riding straight and hit the side of the truck. He was pulled under the rear tires of the truck and was killed, Wimmer said.
"The family is very, very heartbroken over the accident and then you've got an entire neighborhood that's reeling from this," Wimmer said. "This is a tragic accident."
Neighbor Angela Silva was on the scene after the accident.
"I look over and see this lady and she's sitting on the sidewalk just screaming. And I look over and — oh my heavens — I wish I had never seen that," she said.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
