SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - The wilderness fugitive accused of burglarizing rural Utah cabins is getting his case postponed so he can prepare to defend himself.
Troy James Knapp asked for a delay during an unscheduled court appearance Wednesday in Sanpete County.
His evidence hearing was pushed back from Monday to Oct. 2.
Knapp fired a public defender and a family attorney last month and said he was acting as his own lawyer. But he says he needs more time to study Utah law and courtroom procedures.
He faces 39 charges in six Utah counties. In Sanpete County he's accused of breaking into three cabins.
The 45-year-old California parolee went on the run in 2004 and is suspected of living at or ransacking remote Utah cabins for guns, supplies and whisky until his capture in April.
