SALT LAKE CITY -- At a women's conference in New York City, environmentalist and former vice president Al Gore suggested population control as one weapon of choice against global warming.

"You have to educate girls and empower women, and that's the most powerful leveraging factor. And when that happens, then the population begins to stabilize and societies begin to make better choices and more balanced choices," said Al Gore at the Games for Change Festival in NYC on Monday, June 20.

Some call it hypocrisy on Gore's part, while others hail it as a practical solution to both climate and population control and worth taking note of.

Though he makes no mention of eugenics or imposing child-planning laws, and some have compared the suggestion to Ted Turner's call for a global one-child policy like that in China.

As reported by the LA Times, demographers at the United Nations forecast that the world population will reach 7 billion this year, exceed 9 billion in 2045 and pass 10 billion by the end of the century. This growth is expected to come in poor nations in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Though Gore has recently received both praise and criticism for his disapproval of President Obama's approach toward global warming, it seems he has crossed a new line that has left many polarized.
