T25 FOOTBALL-SCHEDULE

Tagovailoa suffers season-ending hip injury in Alabama's win

UNDATED (AP) — If the Alabama Crimson Tide hopes to earn a spot in the CFP playoffs, they’ll have to do it without their Heisman Trophy candidate.

Tua Tagovailoa (TOO'-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH'-ah) is done for the season after dislocating his right hip. He suffered the injury while being dragged down by tacklers after a scramble late in the first half of the Tide’s 38-7 rout of Mississippi State at Starkville.

Tagovailoa needed help getting to his feet and was carted off the field with 3:01 left in the second quarter. Alabama officials say he was flown by helicopter to the St. Vincent's Medical Center in Birmingham, Alabama.

The junior was 14 of 18 for 256 yards and two touchdown passes, giving him 31 on the season.

Tagovailoa had been nursing an ankle injury and Alabama was considering holding him out of this game.

Najee Harris had four touchdowns to help fourth-ranked Alabama build a 35-7 lead before Tagovailoa’s injury.

Backup quarterback Mac Jones was able to lead just one scoring drive, which ended with a field goal.

In other Top 25 games:

— Top-ranked LSU is 10-0 after Joe Burrow threw for 489 yards and five touchdowns in the Tigers’ 58-37 shootout over Mississippi. Burrow enhanced his Heisman Trophy front-runner status by completing 32 of 42 passes, including touchdown passes of 34, 51 and 61 yards to Ja'Marr Chase. The Tigers scored on four of their first five possessions to grab a 28-0 lead.

— Justin Fields threw for a career-high 305 yards and matched his best with four touchdown passes to lead No. 2 Ohio State to a 56-21 win over Rutgers. J.K. Dobbins ran for two scores and cornerback Shaun Wade set up two early Buckeyes TDs with an interception and a forced fumble.

— Trevor Lawrence tied his career high with four touchdowns and third-ranked Clemson extended the nation’s longest current winning streak to 26 games by crushing Wake Forest, 52-3. Tee Higgins had three scoring grabs and Travis Etienne had 121 yards rushing while the Tigers yielded just 105 total yards.

— Jake Fromm had three touchdown passes and No. 5 Georgia wrapped up a berth in the SEC championship game by downing No. 13 Auburn, 21-14. D’Andre Swift had 106 yards rushing for the Bulldogs, who carried a 21-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

— No. 6 Oregon won its ninth straight game and secured a spot in the Pac-12 championship game with a 34-6 victory over Arizona. Justin Herbert threw for 333 yards and four touchdowns, with graduate transfer Juwan Johnson catching five passes for 93 yards and a score.

— Zack Moss ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns while also accumulating 65 receiving yards to help No. 8 Utah rout UCLA, 49-3. Utes quarterback Tyler Huntley threw for a season-high 335 yards and two touchdowns on 14 of 18 passing.

— Minnesota’s playoff hopes were severely damaged in a 23-19 loss at No. 23 Iowa. Nate Stanley threw for two touchdown passes and Tyler Goodson ran for a score as the Hawkeyes dealt the seventh-ranked Golden Gophers their first loss of the season. Iowa scored touchdowns on its first three possessions in earning its first victory over a ranked opponent this season.

— Sean Clifford scored three touchdowns and was 11 of 23 for 179 yards to lead ninth-ranked Penn State past No. 24 Indiana, 34-27. Journey Brown rushed 21 times for 100 yards and added a score to help the Nittany Lions keep their fading CFP semifinal hopes alive.

— Gabe Brkic kicked a 31-yard field goal with 1:45 left after Jalen Hurts threw four touchdown passes in No. 10 Oklahoma’s 34-31 triumph over No. 12 Baylor. Hurts was 30-of-42 passing for 297 yards with all of his TDs coming after Baylor took a 28-3 lead early in the second quarter.

— Kyle Trask threw two touchdown passes after a sluggish first half by No. 11 Florida in a 23-6 victory against Missouri. Trask completed 23 of 35 passes for 282 yards while the Gators held the Tigers to 204 total yards.

— Shea Patterson threw for a season-high 384 yards and four touchdowns in sending 14th-ranked Michigan to a 44-10 romp over Michigan State. The Wolverines scored 24 straight points after giving up the first touchdown and coasted to their most lopsided win in the rivalry since a 49-3 victory in 2002.

— Jonathan Taylor ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 15 Wisconsin to a 37-21 win against Nebraska. Aaron Cruickshank ran back a kickoff 89 yards for a score.

— Chase Claypool tied a Notre Dame record by grabbing four TD passes as the 16th-ranked Fighting Irish hammered No. 21 Navy, 52-20. Ian Book completed 14 of 20 passes for 284 yards and five touchdowns before exiting midway through the third quarter.

— Sam Crosa nailed a 37-yarder field goal on the game’s final play to give No. 17 Cincinnati a 20-17 victory over South Florida. The Bearcats rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to win for the eighth straight time.

— No. 18 Memphis earned a 45-27 win over Houston as Brady White was 22 of 33 passing for 341 yards and five touchdowns. White also ran for a score and Damonte Coxie caught four passes for 93 yards and a pair of TDs.

— Jaylon Henderson threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns to highlight No. 21 Boise State’s 42-9 rout of New Mexico.

— Brock Purdy passed for two TDs and Connor Assalley nailed a 36-yard field goal as time expired to give Iowa State a 23-21 triumph over 22nd-ranked Texas.

— Chuba Hubbard ran for 122 yards and two touchdowns as No. 25 Oklahoma State rolled past Kansas, 31-13.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEBRASKA-FROST

Nebraska gives Frost extension

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska coach Scott Frost has received a two-year contract extension through 2026.

Frost is 8-13 with the Cornhuskers since leaving Central Florida, which he led to a 13-0 record in 2017. The Huskers are 4-6 overall and 2-5 in Big Ten play this season following their fourth straight loss Saturday against Wisconsin.

Bucks continue to travel well

UNDATED (AP) — The Milwaukee Bucks are off to a 9-3 start despite playing two-thirds of their games on the road.

The Bucks picked up another victory in enemy territory as Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) had 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in a 102-83 smothering of the Pacers. Fellow big man Brook Lopez added 15 points, eight boards and five blocks while Milwaukee was holding Indiana to a season-high 32% shooting.

Pacers center Myles Turner had 16 points, 11 rebounds and four blocks in his first game since Oct. 30.

Checking out Saturday’s other NBA action:

— Paul George scored 37 points in his Clippers home debut and Lou Williams added 25 as part of the Clippers’ 150-101 dismantling of the Hawks. George tied his career high with six 3-pointers and made all 11 of his free throws while playing just 20 minutes.

— James Harden poured in 49 points on a whopping 41 shots from the field to power the Rockets to their seventh straight win, 125-105 against the Timberwolves. Ben McLemore furnished 20 points and undrafted rookie Chris Clemons scored a career-high 19 off the bench for Houston.

— Luka Doncic (DAHN’-chihch) contributed 26 points and 15 rebounds to the Mavericks’ 110-102 victory over the Raptors. Kristaps Porzingis (KRIHS’-tahps pohr-ZIHN’-gihs) had 20 points and matched his career best with 15 rebounds for Dallas.

— CJ McCollum scored 32 points and Damiam Lillard added 22 to send the Trail Blazers past the Spurs, 121-116. LaMarcus Aldridge had 30 points and 13 rebounds, but San Antonio lost its fifth straight and fell to 5-8.

— The Heat set a franchise record by fouling only six times in a 109-95 downing of the Pelicans. Bam Adebayo had 18 points and 14 rebounds, and Jimmy Butler added 16 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds to help Miami match its best 12-game start at 9-3.

— The Nets picked up a 117-111 win over the Bulls behind Spencer Dinwiddie’s 24 points. Joe Harris had 22 points and eight assists for Brooklyn, which snapped a three-game losing skid despite playing without guard Kyrie Irving because of a shoulder injury.

— Devonte’ Graham nailed his ninth 3-pointer of the game with 2.8 seconds remaining to finish with 29 points and send the Hornets past the Knocks, 103-102. P.J. Washington scored 19 points and Terry Rozier had 16 for Charlotte, which also earned Friday’s victory with a late 3-pointer.

Russell to miss at least two weeks with right thumb injury

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Golden State guard D’Angelo Russell will be sidelined for at least two weeks after he sprained his right thumb in Friday’s 105-100 loss to the Boston Celtics.

The injury further depleted a backcourt already missing injured Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson.

Russell wasn’t going on the team’s four-game road trip that begins Sunday at New Orleans that also includes stops in Memphis, Dallas as Utah.

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL-SCHEDULE

Maryland beats Oakland

UNDATED (AP) — It took seventh-ranked Maryland almost an entire half to find their offense in a win against Oakland.

The Terrapins closed the first half on an 11-0 run before coasting to an 80-50 rout of the Golden Grizzlies. The Terps led by just two before their scoring spurt put them in control.

Darryl Morsell (mohr-SEHL’) scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the second half, while Anthony Cowan added 11 points, seven assists and six rebounds for the 3-0 Terrapins.

In other Top 25 games:

— Mamadi Diakite (MAH’-mah-dee dee-ah-KEE’-tay) and Jay Huff scored 13 points each in ninth-ranked Virginia’s 60-42 stifling of Columbia. Kihei (KEE’-hay) Clark added 10 points for the 3-0 Cavaliers, who led 31-17 at halftime and substituted liberally throughout the second half.

— No. 10 Villanova coasted to a 78-54 throttling of Ohio as Saddiq Bey (sah-DEEK’ bay) scored 19 points and Justin Moore added 18. Villanova broke the game open with a 27-4 run in the final 6:36 of the half, turning a one-point deficit into a 43-21 lead.

— Lester Quinones furnished 21 points and 10 rebounds to help 13th-rated Memphis pound Alcorn State, 102-56. Precious Achiuwa added 20 points for the Tigers, who bounced back from Tuesday’s eight-point loss to Oregon.

— Jordan Bowden scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half and Lamonte Turner finished with 16 points in Tennessee’s 75-62 upset of No. 20 Washington.

— Skylar Mays scored 18 points and Darius Days added 17 with 11 rebounds as No. 23 LSU got past Nicholls State, 75-65.

— D'Shawn Schwartz scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half of No. 25 Colorado’s 71-53 win against San Diego.

Kaepernick's workout moved at last minute

UNDATED (AP) — There was a big change of plans for Colin Kaepernick's (KAP’-ur-niks) NFL workout.

Just 15 minutes before Kaepernick was scheduled to work out Saturday for 25 NFL teams at the Atlanta Falcons' training complex in Flowery Branch, the quarterback's representatives announced the session was being moved 60 miles away to a high school in Riverdale.

Just eight of the original 25 team representatives followed along to the new location.

The representatives said the switch was made because they wanted the media to be allowed to watch and videotape the workout.

Kaepernick threw passes for about 40 minutes at Charles Drew High School and spent nearly that long signing autographs for a crowd that steadily grew.

In other NFL news:

— Browns starting safety Morgan Burnett is done for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, according to a person familiar with the injury. Burnett got hurt in the first half of Thursday’s 21-7 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

— The Jets have placed center Ryan Kalil on season-ending injured reserve with a knee injury. Kalil came out of retirement in August to sign a one-year, $8.5 million contract with New York after playing all 12 of his previous NFL seasons with Carolina.

Isles stay hot with comeback win

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Islanders still haven’t suffered a regulation loss since Oct. 11 in Carolina.

The Islanders are 13-0-1 in their last 14 games after turning a 3-0, third-period deficit into a 4-3 shootout win at Philadelphia. Mat Barzal scored during the Isles’ late rally before he and Jordan Eberle provided the shootout tallies.

Anthony Beauvillier (boh-VIH’-lee-ay) scored twice for the second straight game, and Thomas Greiss (grys) stopped 28 shots in his seventh consecutive win.

Sean Couturier (koo-TOOR’-ee-ay) and Oskar Lindblom each had a goal and an assist for the Flyers.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

— T.J. Oshie (OH’-shee) tied it with 59 seconds left in regulation and Jakub Vrana scored the decisive goal in the shootout as the Capitals beat the Bruins, 3-2. Braden Holtby stopped 21 shots for Washington, which outshot the Bruins 44-23 in regulation and rebounded from its first regulation loss since Oct. 14.

— Derek Grant’s first career hat trick was the difference in the Ducks’ 4-1 win at St. Louis. John Gibson made 37 saves as Anaheim snapped a five-game losing streak.

— Jack Eichel (EYE’-kehl) delivered his first career four-goal game and the Sabres ended their six-game losing streak with a 4-2 victory against the Senators. Eichel broke a 2-2 deadlock with 7:47 remaining before adding an empty-netter for Buffalo’s first four-goal performance since Thomas Vanek in April 2010.

— The Penguins rolled over the Maple Leafs, 6-1 as Dominik Kahun (kah-HOON’) scored twice and tied a career high with three points. Bryan Rust also had a three-point game, with a short-handed goal and two assists.

— Kevin Labanc had a goal, two assists and the shootout winner to guide the Sharks to their sixth consecutive win, 4-3 against the Red Wings. Logan Couture had three assists to help San Jose reach the .500 mark for the first time since Oct. 15.

— Nathan MacKinnon’s second goal of the game bailed out the Avalanche in a 5-4 victory at Vancouver. Andre Burakovsky (bur-ah-KAHF’-skee) had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which blew a 4-2 lead in the final 2:37 of regulation.

— Andrei Svechnikov (SVEHCH’-nih-kahv) tallied 1:33 into OT as the Hurricanes got past the Wild, 4-3 at Minnesota. Carolina squandered a 3-1 lead in the second period before Svechnikov gave the Hurricanes their fifth victory in six overtime games this season.

— The Blackhawks improved to 5-1-1 in their last seven games as Patrick Kane collected a goal and an assist in a 7-2 thumping of the Predators. Alex Nylander (Nee’-lan-dur) scored twice in the third period and Robin Lehner (LEH’-nur) made 39 saves for Chicago.

— The Devils pulled out a 4-3 win at Montreal on Kyle Palmieri’s power-play goal 90 seconds into overtime. Nico Hischier (HEE’-shee-ur) provided a short-handed goal and Wayne Simmonds knotted the score with a power-play tally late in the third period.

— Evgenii Dadonov (dah-DAH’-nahv) scored twice to lead the Panthers’ 4-3 verdict over the Rangers. Jonathan Huberdeau (HOO’-bur-doh) and Keith Yandle each had three assists as Florida coach Joel Quenneville (KWEHN’-vihl) picked up his 900th career victory.

— Steven Stamkos notched his 400th career goal, but the Jets improved to 6-1-1 in their last eight games with a 4-3 win over the Lightning in Tampa. Kyle Connor had a goal and an assist to back Connor Hellebuyck (HEH’-leh-buhk), who turned back 31 shots.

— Darcy Kuemper (KEHM-pur) stopped 35 shots and slammed an opponent to the ice during a brawl in the second period of the Coyotes’ 3-0 shutout of the Flames. Derek Stepan, Carl Soderberg and Lawson Crouse in Arizona’s third win in four games.

— Jeff Carter scored in his 1,000th career game and Drew Doughty had a goal and an assist as the Kings topped the Golden Knights, 4-3. Nikolai Prokhorkin (proh-KOHR’-kihn) scored his first career goal and Jonathan Quick made 28 saves to help Los Angeles get its season-high third straight win.

— Dallas completed a 3-0-1 road trip by getting an overtime goal from Jamie Benn to beat the Oilers, 5-4. Jujhar Khaira (JOO’-jahr KEHR’-uh) collected two goals and Connor McDavid followed his six-point performance by getting three assists for Edmonton.

OLYMPICS-BASEBALL-US-MEXICO

Mexico rallies to beat US 3-2, earn Olympic baseball berth

TOKYO (AP) — Mexico has qualified for the Olympic baseball tournament for the first time by beating the United States 3-2.

Matt Clark hit a tying home run off former St. Louis pitcher Brandon Dickson leading off the bottom of the ninth inning and Efren Navarro had a broken-bat single against Caleb Thielbar to drive in the winning run in the 10th.

Mexico joined host Japan, South Korea and Israel in the six-nation field for next summer’s Tokyo Games and earned the bronze medal in the Premier12 tournament, which served as qualifying. The United States will play next spring in the Americas tournament, which determines one of the two remaining Olympic berths.

TENNIS-BERDYCH RETIRES

Former No. 4 Berdych announces retirement

LONDON (AP) — Former Wimbledon runner-up Tomas Berdych (TOH'-mahs BUR'-dihk) has announced his retirement from tennis.

The 34-year-old Czech reached the 2010 Wimbledon final, beating Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch) along the way before losing to Rafael Nadal (nah-DAHL’). He also reached the semifinals at least once at each of the other three Grand Slams and earned 13 career titles, with a career-high ranking of No. 4.
