TAYLORSVILLE — It was 18 minutes of agony for the Hunter girls basketball team as the Wolverines went scoreless for an entire second quarter and parts of the first and third quarter.
The multi-quarter dry spell allowed the favored Fremont Silver Wolves to gain a commanding lead as they rolled to a blowout 58-20 victory over Hunter to advance to the 6A girls quarterfinals round of the state tournament. The Silver Wolves used an aggressive and smothering defense to keep the Wolverines at bay.
Hunter scored its last points with 3:42 in the first quarter, where they stayed at 8 points until the 2:22 mark in the third quarter.
Fremont was led in scoring by Emma Calvert, who finished with 16 points and chipped away at Hunter with multiple baskets in the post. Much of Fremont’s strategy Tuesday was getting the ball into the post and making quick baskets with their size over Hunter’s smaller players. The strategy worked as 19 of Fremont’s 22 made shots came within 5-10 feet from the basket.
Fremont will play Riverton, who beat American Fork 68-52 Tuesday morning, in a quarterfinals matchup on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Salt Lake Community College.
