TORONTO — Nick Rimando stopped a penalty kick, but Real Salt Lake fell into a 2-0 hole early en route to a 3-1 loss to defending MLS Cup champions Toronto FC Friday night at BMO Field.

Jozy Altidore scored twice, once via penalty kick in the 23rd minute and adding a goal just before the halftime whistle to lead Toronto FC (1-2-0), who also got a goal from Tosaint Ricketts in second-half stoppage time.

Corey Baird scored the first goal of his rookie season for Real Salt Lake (1-2-1), which will host Vancouver at 7:30 p.m. MT April 7 in its first game at Rio Tinto Stadium in nearly a month.

"The only thing I’m going to say is I know what the problem is, and it’s going to be remedied soon," RSL coach Mike Petke said. "It’s going to be fixed, one way or the other."

Rimando saved a penalty kick off the boot of Toronto star Sebastian Giovinco in the 16th minute, but Altidore scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot just five minutes later after defender Justen Glad was whistled for a foul in the box.

Jefferson Savorino set up Baird’s goal with eight minutes remaining in regulation to pull the visitors within one on a shot inside the far post. But Ricketts’ eliminated the comeback threat about 10 minutes later to seal Toronto’s first win of the season.
