Hopkins' late layup gives Fresno St. 78-76 OT win over Drake

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Jaron Hopkins drove to the hoop for the winning layup with five seconds left in overtime as Fresno State took a 78-76 victory over Drake in the Mountain West/Missouri Valley Challenge on Saturday.

Cullen Russo and Bryson Williams made back-to-back dunks to give Fresno State a 76-74 lead with 36 seconds left in the extra period. Drake's De'Antae McMurray answered with a layup with 12 seconds remaining, followed by Hopkins' game-winner. Russo had a steal as time expired to secure the win.

Paul Watson and Jahmel Taylor had 19 points apiece to lead the Bulldogs (5-2). Hopkins added 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds.

Fresno State led 41-29 at the break but Drake rallied in the second half with McMurray completing a 3-point play and adding two free throws in the final two minutes to send the game to overtime.

Billy Wampler led Drake (1-7) with 16 points.
