GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — Dearica Hamby had 23 points and 10 rebounds on Thursday and 13th-seeded Wake Forest women knocked off No. 5 seed and 22nd-ranked Syracuse 85-79 in the second round of the ACC tournament.
Wake Forest (13-19) entered the tournament with just two conference wins and will play No. 4 seed and 16th-ranked Duke in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Deacons pulled away with a 9-0 run capped on Hamby's free throws at 68-53 with 7:08 left.
Alexis Peterson scored 11 of her career-high 34 points over the final 4:07, leading Syracuse (21-9) to rally back within 81-78 with 51 seconds left. But Hamby secured the offensive rebound on Ataijah Taylor's missed layup with 24 seconds left and Millesa Calicott made both free throws to give the Deacons a five-point lead with 16.7 seconds.
Amber Campbell and Kandice Ball had career highs of 21 and 14 points, respectively for Wake Forest.
