BEL AIR, Md. (AP) — Police say a Maryland police officer who was shot by sheriff's deputies during a standoff this spring has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Harford County Sheriff's Office says in a news release that 42-year-old James Ward was found dead Monday morning inside his Bel Air home. Deputies found him after spending several hours outside the house trying to communicate with him. Roads in the area were closed and start times were delayed at a nearby school.
Ward was a veteran of Baltimore County's police department. He was shot by sheriff's deputies during a standoff in April, also at his house.
During that standoff, the sheriff's office reported that Ward was suicidal and fired at deputies, who returned fire. He faced attempted murder charges for that shooting.
