DUMFRIES, Va. (AP) — The National Museum of the Marine Corps in Virginia is planning to close for three months at the start of 2016 to allow for the display of two new aircraft.
The museum plans to add a restored World War II SBD Dauntless dive bomber and a Vietnam-era Sikorsky helicopter to its Leatherneck gallery.
To accommodate the aircraft installation, the museum will close its doors from Jan. 4 through March 31. The outdoor grounds, including the Semper Fidelis Memorial Park, will remain open.
The museum, not far from the Marine Corps base at Quantico, Virginia, draws more than 500,000 visitors a year. Admission is free. It opened in 2006 and is in the midst of constructing an addition that will double its size.
