INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Alexander Rossi earned $2,548,743 for winning the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500.
Rossi's winnings included a $50,000 bonus from Sunoco for being the top rookie in the race. The overall purse for the 33 drivers was $13,273,253.
Rossi stretched his fuel mileage for the final 90 miles to score an upset victory. The American is the first rookie to win since Helio Castroneves and the first American-born rookie to win since Louis Meyer in 1928.
Carlos Munoz was runner-up for the second time in four years and earned $788,743.
Third-place finisher Josef Newgarden earned $574,243. Defending race winner Juan Pablo Montoya finished last, but pocketed $339,493.
