PARIS (AP) — France's defensive woes worsened on Saturday as Jeremy Mathieu was ruled out of the European Championship with a calf injury.

The French football federation said in a statement that the Barcelona defender was replaced by Samuel Umtiti in coach Didier Deschamps' 23-man squad for Euro 2016, which starts on June 10 with host nation France playing Romania in Group A.

Umtiti, who plays for Lyon, was on a list of reserve players.

Deschamps is already without the injured Raphael Varane.
