Suicide is the leading cause of death in Utah youth ages ten to seventeen and the state’s suicide rate for all ages is more than 60 percent above the national average. In order to combat this epidemic, the Southeast Utah Health Department created The Hope Squad of Carbon and Emery Counties. They bring awareness and provide suicide prevention activities to benefit those in the community who need it the most. By using evidence-based programs and partners to create positive behavior change and promote protective factors for prevention, they believe suicide is preventable and that no one should be left to deal with this alone. This Hope squad does not act as a counseling service but are educated on how to recognize signs of suicide contemplation. If you are or know someone who is having thoughts of suicide you can use the SafeUT app or call 800-273-8255. SelectHealth recognizes the lifesaving influence of the Hope Squad of Carbon and Emery Counties as another example of how Utah Gives Back.
