SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - The son of a U.S. district court judge has been found guilty of killing his wife at their home in a wealthy suburb in Puerto Rico.
Pablo Casellas Toro also was found guilty late Wednesday of weapons offenses and destroying evidence. His 46-year-old wife, Carmen Paredes, was killed in July 2012, her body riddled with about a dozen shots, including one to the forehead, forensic officials testified.
Defense attorney Harry Padilla said he plans to appeal the verdict against the insurance broker. Casellas had said he was innocent and that he came home to find his wife dead and an unknown man escaping over a fence.
The trial lasted nearly three weeks and was delayed several times after Casellas was hospitalized in July for undisclosed reasons. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Feb. 6.
Casellas is the son of U.S. District Court Judge Salvador Casellas, a former Puerto Rico treasury secretary who was appointed to the federal bench in 1994 by President Bill Clinton.
