Golf is always searching for the next Tiger Woods. Scottie Scheffler is the next candidate. The world's No. 1 player left little doubt when he became the first back-to-back winner of The Players Championship. His lead atop the world ranking is the biggest in seven years. His consistency and nine worldwide wins in the last 25 months is what gets people talking. Scheffler was quick to point out that while he has been No. 1 for a total of 78 weeks, Woods was No. 1 for just over 13 years. Scheffler says to be mentioned alongside Woods is special.

Players on the PGA Tour board are preparing to meet with the Saudi leader backing LIV Golf. Rory McIlroy says such a meeting with Yasir Al-Rumayyan should have happened long ago. Al-Rumayyan is governor of the Public Investment Fund, which backs LIV Golf. Details remain vague on a planned meeting Monday, including the location and who will be involved. Also unclear is what will be on the table. Patrick Cantlay is one of the six player directors on the board. He doesn't anything too substantive. McIlroy is drawing distinctions between Al-Rumayyan and disruptive nature of LIV operators like Greg Norman.

Scottie Scheffler has become the first player in the 50 years of The Players Championship to win back-to-back. This was the hardest. Not only was he dealing with neck pain all week, he started the final round five shots behind. Scheffler closed with a 64. That matches the lowest final round by a winner. He also tied a Players Championship record with a five-shot comeback. U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark, British Open champion Brian Harman and Xander Schauffele all finished one shot behind. All of them had their chances over the final three holes to force a playoff.

Xander Schauffele started the day with a four-shot deficit. He had to settle for a one-shot lead over U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark at The Players Championship. Schauffele delivered another bogey-free round and shot 65. Clark was still tied until hitting some 20 yards short of the island on the par-3 17th and escaping with bogey. He shot 70. Right behind them is British Open champion Brian Harman. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler is among six players within five shots of the lead on a TPC Sawgrass course where anything can happen. No one has ever won back-to-back in The Players.

Catlin played college golf at New Mexico and has seven victories worldwide. He has won three times in Europe and three times on the Asian Tour. His 59 gives him a two-shot lead over Jason Kokrak.

Wyndham Clark is leading The Players Championship by four shots after another 65. The big concern was for Scottie Scheffler. The No. 1 player in the world felt pain in his neck area on his second hole of the day and was trying to just finish the round. Scheffler shot 69 and was six back. It was his 25th consecutive round under par. Scheffler had treatment on the course and after his round. Clark is tough even in the best of circumstances. The U.S. Open champion opened his second nine with four straight birdies and shot 30.

That's his lowest start at the TPC Sawgrass and it gave him a share of the lead with Xander Schauffele and Wyndham Clark. One tee ball went into the water on the 18th. The one causing issues was on No. 7, his 16th hole of the round. Jordan Spieth and Viktor Hovland were questioning whether the ball landed above the red hazard line. Bernhard Langer won't be at the Masters this year because of pickleball. The two-time Masters champion reveals on the "Musings on Golf" podcast that he tore his left Achilles tendon while playing pickleball last month. Langer says it's part of his fitness routine. This was supposed to be his last Masters. Now he'll likely push that back to next year. This is only the second time in the last 40 years he won't be playing at Augusta National in April. The 66-year-old German holds the PGA Tour Champions record with 46 victories. That includes 12 senior majors.

PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan isn't offering any details on negotiations with the Saudi backers of LIV Golf. But he expresses confidence the tour can strike a deal with the Public Investment Fund and that golf's fractured landscape can be repaired. He also sounded a confident tone that he's the best person to lead the way. Monahan held a news conference Tuesday for the first time in nearly seven months. Since then, the tour got a minority investor pumping up to $3 billion into golf. And LIV persuaded Masters champion Jon Rahm to join. Monahan did not set a timetable for an outcome.

Patrick Reed has been eligible for every major championship since the 2014 Masters. That streak is now in jeopardy at the PGA Championship. Reed was not among the first batch of invitations the PGA of America sent out. His world ranking is No. 109 and plunging because LIV Golf doesn't get world ranking points. He has yet to win on LIV. Reed is playing Asian Tour events with pedestrian results. It's unclear if he'll get an invitation. But he can help himself this week in Macau on the Asian Tour. Otherwise, he'll need a big week at the Masters.

The Players Championship is the only show in town when it comes to golf in America this week. This is the 50th edition of the PGA Tour's premier championship. All the other main tours are off this week. The purse is the richest in golf at $25 million. The tournament used to be billed as having the strongest field in golf. That's no longer the case because of so many defections to LIV Golf. LIV is done with its two-week swing on the other side of the world but now has 22 players in the Asian Tour's International Series event in Macau.

Scottie Scheffler is the best in golf from tee to green. He was hot with the putter at Bay Hill and the result was predictable. Scheffler demolished a strong field to win by five shots. It's the largest margin at the Arnold Palmer Invitational since Tiger Woods in 2012. Scheffler shot a 66 in the final round while playing in the last group. That was the best score by two shots on Sunday. U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark had a 70 and was runner-up. Shane Lowry shot 72 and finished third. Lowry started the final round tied for the lead with Scheffler.

Brice Garnett wasn't sure how many PGA Tour events he could play this year with only past champion status. He played his first one in the Puerto Rico Open and came away a winner. Garnett made a 15-foot birdie putt on the fourth playoff hole to beat Erik Barnes. The victory gives him a two-year exemption. That's effectively the next three years on the PGA Tour. It sends him to The Players Championship next week and the PGA Championship in May. Barnes narrowly missed a 12-foot birdie putt to extend the playoff. He was looking for his first win.

Abraham Ancer regained just enough of the composure that helped him pull out to a five-stroke lead after two rounds to beat Cameron Smith and Paul Casey in a playoff and win the inaugural LIV Golf tournament in Hong Kong on Sunday. Ancer's comfortable lead at the start of the final round gradually disappeared with the Mexican struggling to keep pace with the chasing pack after a 2-over round of 72 at the Hong Kong Golf Club course. The Hong Kong tournament is the second of three LIV Golf events that are part of the Asian swing, with the third in early May in Singapore. Next up on the LIV tour will be Miami from April 5-7.
