BAMAKO, Mali (AP) - The officer who led last year's military coup, and who was arrested last week, says from his jail cell that the soldiers sent to detain him were in fact trying to kill him.
Gen. Amadou Haya Sanogo said the arresting officers were "waiting for my bodyguards to flinch just a little so that they could open fire on all of us."
Sanogo, then a captain, led the March 2012 coup, upending the country's twenty-year history of democracy. Though he was forced to step down by the international community, he continued to meddle in state affairs. In a bold move last week, Mali's newly elected government arrested Sanogo and charged him with complicity in the kidnapping of fellow soldiers who had opposed his rise to power.
