TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Reigning Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH'-dah) had an outstanding NFL debut, throwing for four touchdowns and outplaying No. 1 overall draft pick Jameis (JAY'-mihs) Winston in Tennessee's 42-14 pounding of Tampa Bay. Mariota threw for 209 yards without an interception and joined Hall of Famer Fran Tarkenton as the only players to throw four or more TD passes in their first NFL game. Meanwhile, Bucs rookie quarterback Jameis (JAY'-mihs) Winston became the first quarterback since Brett Favre (fahrv) in 1991 to have his first NFL pass intercepted and returned for a touchdown.
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Greg Zuerlein (ZWUR'-lyn) kicked a 37-yard field goal in overtime to cap a Rams comeback in a 34-31 win over the two-time defending NFC-champion Seattle Seahawks. After Zuerlein gave the Rams the lead, the defense stopped Marshawn Lynch on 4th-and-1 from the St. Louis 42 to end the game. Down 31-24 with 53 seconds left, the Rams tied the game after Seahawks defensive back Dion Bailey stumbled on Lance Kendricks' 37-yard touchdown catch.
IRVING, Texas (AP) — Tony Romo hit Jason Witten for an 11-yard touchdown with seven seconds left before Dan Bailey's extra point gave Dallas a 27-26 win over the New York Giants. Romo threw all three of his TD passes in the second half and finished 36 of 45 for 356 yards and two interceptions. Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie returned a fumble 57-yards for a touchdown, but the Giants' only other journey into the end zone was Rashad Jennings' one-yard plunge that put New York ahead 23-13 with 8:01 remaining.
NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked Novak Djokovic (JOH'-koh-vihch) has picked up his second U.S. Open men's single and 10th major crown with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 triumph over No. 2 Roger Federer. It's the second time Djokovic has won three major championships in the same year. He also topped Federer in the Wimbledon final in similar fashion, dropping the second set and taking the next two.
UNDATED (AP) — Three-time NBA MVP Moses Malone has died at 60. Malone's body was discovered when he failed to report to a celebrity golf tournament in which he was scheduled to play. The Hall of Fame center was part of the 76ers' 1983 NBA championship team, led the league in total rebounds for five straight seasons and remains the NBA's career leader in offensive boards.
