INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — An Indianapolis school district says a high school football player has died after experiencing a medical emergency during practice.
The Pike High School sophomore became ill during practice on Monday and died Tuesday. The Metropolitan School District of Pike Township did not name the student or release any other details of the incident. It says in a statement the entire school "community is deeply saddened by the death of one of our students. We extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends for their profound loss."
Football practice has been suspended this week out of respect for the family.
The Marion County Coroner's Office says it has performed an autopsy and that the cause of death is pending toxicology reports.
