NEW YORK (AP) — In afternoon play at the U.S. Open, men's top seed Novak Djokovic (NOH'-vak JOH'-kuh-vich) leads the way with a third-round match against Russia's Mikhail Youzhny. Also this afternoon, eighth-ranked American Madison Keys is going up against Japan's Naomi Osaka in a third-round match.
UNDATED (AP) — There are three games tonight in Top-25 football. Stanford is the highest-ranked team in action as the eighth-ranked Cardinal entertain Kansas State. The other games feature Michigan State, the 12th-ranked school, home to Furman with No. 23 Baylor hosting Northwestern State.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee, the ninth-ranked team in the AP preseason poll, almost lost its opening game last night. The Volunteers' game with Appalachian State was tied at the end of regulation at 13. The Vols completed play with a 20-13 victory.
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — Play in the PGA's Deutsche (DOY'-chuh) Bank Championship starts today. This is the second stop on the FedEx Cup playoff. The winner of last week's opening tournament was Patrick Reed and the defending champion of the Deutsche Bank is Rickie Fowler.
DARLINGTON, S.C. (AP) — There won't be any qualifying today for Sunday's Sprint Cup race in Darlington, South Carolina. Very bad weather is in the forecast so the field will be set based on points in the standings. That means Kevin Harvick will start from the pole position, alongside Brad Keselowski (kehs-LOW'-skee).
