Austin Collie was the best receiver ever to play at BYU, but the Cougars' best pure catcher of the ball was Ben Cahoon, now in his 13th season as a pro with the CFL's Montreal Alouettes.

(In the linked video, check out his block at 7:12)

(And here's one of my all-time favorites: "The Helmet Catch" in French, no less)

Cahoon is on the verge of a pair of notable career milestones, one of which he is almost sure to reach on Friday night, as the Alouettes visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

BYU fans can watch that game at 6:00pm MT Friday evening, as it will be televised live on the NFL Network.

With five receptions, Cahoon will become only the second CFL receiver to make 1,000 career catches.

Cahoon is also only 12 receptions away from the league's alltime career record.

CFL Receptions

1. Terry Vaughn: 1,006

2. Ben Cahoon: 995

--

With a catch last week, Cahoon moved into second place on the league's consecutive games list.

CFL Most Consecutive Games with a Reception

1. Don Narcisse: 216

2. Ben Cahoon: 138

--

With 13,087 career receiving yards, Cahoon is 7th on the CFL's alltime receiving yardage list, and should move up at least one spot by the end of the season.

CFL Career Receiving Yards

4. Terry Vaughn: 13,746

5. Geroy Simon*, 13,300

6. Ray Elgaard: 13,198

7. Ben Cahoon*: 13,087

Note: if Cahoon breaks the 1,000 catch plateau this week but not the career reception record of 1,006, chances are the second record will fall on Friday, October 1st as Montreal visits Calgary. That game will also be live on the NFL Network--at the same time BYU plays at Utah State. Channel-flipper alert!

Cahoon has relatives in Southern Alberta; it would be perfect if he could break the CFL's career reception record at McMahon Stadium on October 1st in front of what are sure to be many supporters.

*******

Look for Cahoon to be a telephone guest on an upcoming radio broadcast of "BYU Football with Head Coach Bronco Mendenhall."

On tonight's LaVell Edwards Stadium show, Chad Lewis and Bryan Kariya will join Bronco, Marc Lyons and me along with our live audience, from 7:00-8:00pm on KSL Newsradio.
