(KSL News) The traditional carol calls for a white Christmas, but how about making the holiday a little more "green?"
Many homes will be filled with wrapping paper, boxes and gift bags tomorrow, but there are a few things everyone can do to cut back on the amount of trash generated this holiday season.
Waste Management of Utah is encouraging everyone to think green. The company suggests:
- Set aside a bin to recycle cardboard and wrapping paper.
- Donate or recycle the old to make room for the new.
- Make your own wrapping paper using newspaper, old maps or posters.
"We try throughout the year to get the message across about recycling, and that it's not a difficult thing to do. It takes a little thought -- one thing for this can, one thing for that can -- but it can be done," said Susan Hayward, spokeswoman for Waste Management of Utah.
About 1 million extra tons of trash will be generated during the holiday season.
