SALT LAKE CITY -- New government figures show Utahns are making less money than the rest of the country, but that may not really be the case.

The research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis shows that, divided equally, Utahns made nearly $30,000 each in 2007 -- good enough for 48th among the 50 states and nearly $9,000 less than the national average.

However, per capita measures of income in Utah are distorted. That's because per capita numbers measure figures over everyone in the state, including children who aren't generating income.

Zions Bank economist Jeff Threadgold says Utahns have lower-than-average incomes, but they also enjoy a lower-than-average cost of living.

Summit County came in tops in the state at just over $59,000 per person; San Juan County came in dead last at about $17,000 per person.
