SALT LAKE CITY -- The state of Utah saw a shift in power in 2009 as President Obama chose Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to become the new U.S. Ambassador to China. Our newsroom voted this the No. 1 local story of 2009.

In early 2009, Huntsman had just been re-elected in a landslide. But there had been talk he had higher aspirations.

Reports of meetings with top White House officials were confirmed in May when Pres. Obama nominated him to be the next U.S. Ambassador to China.

"Mr. President, I humbly accept your call to service," Huntsman said.

Obama said, "Throughout his career, Jon has shown a willingness to move beyond the old ideologies and stale debate that all too often bring progress to a standstill."

Back in Utah, emotion was evident. "The decision we have made was not an easy one," Huntsman said. "It was very difficult."

A confirmation hearing wouldn't come until July, and Huntsman sailed through it. He was even a hit with Chinese media.

John Zang of China Times Television said, "It speaks volumes about the kind of personal touch Governor Huntsman will have when he arrives in China."

The next step: A transition of power. As Gov. Huntsman resigned, Gary Herbert was sworn in.

"Gary, I am turning over to you a significant treasure," Huntsman said. "Your goal is to enhance its luster. I know you will thrive, my friend."

Huntsman left the Capitol on his motorcycle, riding off to take on new challenges overseas.

Huntsman has since hosted Pres. Obama on his recent visit to China. Huntsman and his family were in Utah during Christmas, but he shied away from media attention.
