TAYLORSVILLE — The St. Baldrick's Foundation held its annual fundraiser for kids with cancer Wednesday by hosting a raffle, chess tournament, games, and shaving heads.

The event held at Salt Lake Community College was a lively one with a variety of activities. The head shaving was done in honor of children that undergo chemotherapy in their battle with cancer. All the proceeds go toward the research of a cure for pediatric cancer.

Cory Ortiz organized this year's fundraiser after the usual hosts left the state. "The first time I shaved my head, it really got me hooked on this charity," said Ortiz. "The whole idea of giving back to the community, it's really touched my life in so many ways."

After not cutting his hair since last year's shaving event, Ortiz was one of 23 individuals who stepped up to have their heads shorn during the event. The shavings drew a count down and cheers from the audience.

The organization hoped to raise $3,000 at the fundraiser, but according to Ortiz, the organization had already raised that amount when the event still had a few hours left.

"I want to help inspire somebody how the charity inspired me four years ago, so that other people will start throwing these events," said Ortiz. "This is the only one in the state of Utah, and so I hope to see more events like this."
