SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities are seeking to locate two men involved in a shooting in the parking lot of a downtown gas station Thursday evening.
At approximately 5:52 p.m., police received a call of a shooting at 615 S. 200 West, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. James Tracy. When officers arrived at the scene, they spoke to witnesses and determined two men staying at the Motel 6, 176 W. 600 South, were involved in an argument.
Officers learned one of the males went to the Maverick gas station across the street from the motel with a gun. The second man followed in a car, and the first man started shooting at the second man while he was still in the car, Tracy said. The shooter ran back to the motel, entered his room and then left the area.
The presumed victim also left the area. It is unknown if he sustained any injuries during the shooting. Authorities are trying to locate him to determine what happened.
Police officers, who initially believed the shooter was still at the motel, evacuated several rooms as they searched for him. When police obtained motel surveillance video, they realized the shooter had left the scene, Tracy said.
Authorities recovered a bag of guns from one of the motel rooms but are still working to determine whether they belonged to the shooter.
Tracy said two children were slightly hurt when either “a ricochet or a stray bullet” struck a vehicle not involved in the altercation and shattered the windows. Officials did not confirm whether the children were in or outside of the car at the time shots were fired.
Police are reviewing surveillance video from several locations and are hopeful they’ll be able to identify the shooter fairly quickly, Tracy said.
