KAYSVILLE — A Kaysville fire that forced residents to briefly evacuate Friday night started after a group of young adults shot fireworks at each other, the Kaysville Fire Department said on Saturday.

The group arrived at the East Mountain Wilderness Park and "began discharging bottle rocket-style fireworks at each other. During this activity, one firework appears to have traveled beyond the parking lot and landed in dry grass, igniting the fire," the fire department said in a Facebook post.

The fire briefly forced the evacuation of homes in the area.

The fire department said, based on video evidence and witness statements, "The incident appears to have resulted from the reckless use of fireworks rather than an intentional attempt to start a fire."

The group left without calling 911, the department said.

The fire department said that the Kaysville Police Department has identified and contacted multiple individuals who admitted to shooting the fireworks in the park. The police investigation is ongoing and actions will be taken as appropriate, the fire department said.

The fire department reminds the public that the area where the fire occurred is a designated no-fireworks area, and bottle rockets are also illegal in Utah.
