ALTA — A person struck by lightning died while they were hiking with another person in the American Fork Twin Peaks area near Little Cottonwood Canyon on Saturday, according to the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office.

The Salt Lake County Search and Rescue team dispatched a helicopter and quickly located the pair. Stormy conditions delayed search-and-rescue teams, who reached them soon after the storm cleared. The person struck by lightning did not survive.

The sheriff's office credited Snowbird Ski Patrol with safely escorting the person's hiking partner off the mountain.
