SPANISH FORK — A malfunction in a medical gas storage closet caused an explosion and fire at a Spanish Fork dental office Friday morning, the city of Spanish Fork said. No injuries were reported. A press release said Spanish Fork Fire and EMS was dispatched to the block of 500 North Main Street after receiving reports of an explosion. When crews arrived, they saw smoke and flames coming from an exterior utility closet and the roof of the building. "Fire crews quickly initiated an aggressive interior and exterior attack, successfully containing the fire to the attic space," Spanish Fork said. Fire crews were able to control the fire in under 45 minutes. The building sustained "significant smoke and water damage," the city said. Authorities estimated the fire and explosion caused approximately $3 million in damage and rendered the building uninhabitable. Preliminary investigation showed that a malfunctioning regulator in the medical gas closet led to an "uncontrolled release of medical gases into the attic," leading to an explosion, the press release said.
