SANDY — A fire at a local fast food restaurant caused over $50,000 in damage Wednesday night.
Sandy Fire Department responded to a fire at the Sonic Drive-In, 10200 S State Street, at around 7:15 p.m. Sandy Fire Battalion Chief Matt Stuebner said workers smelled smoke and had difficulty locating the source of it. The workers eventually realized that the ice cream machine was producing a black pressurized smoke and flames.
Stuebner said the flames did spread to the ceiling, but firefighters were able to put out the fire before any further structural damage was caused.
The cause of the fire was determined to be from the ice cream machine. Sandy Fire Department estimated $50,000 in total damage for smoke and water damage, as well as the loss of the restaurant's ice cream machine.
