HERRIMAN -- School kids from all over Salt Lake County are in Herriman Wednesday, seeing, smelling and hearing all about farm life.
Among the sights, smells and sounds of this working farm, the animals are the main attraction for Lydia Ferguson and Elysia McBride.
"I got to pet a big horse," Lydia said. "The horses are my favorite, because they call them ponies."
"I petted the sheep. I thought that was cool," Elysia said.
Danie Bills' mom runs Butterfield farm.
"We put anywhere between 1,900 to 2,400 kids through in two days," Bills said, as kids hurried past her to another station. "As you can see, they are always very excited."
The students are mostly second-graders in the Salt Lake County area, and the field trip includes learning about ATV safety, food production, grain, milk, even mosquitoes.
Eleven different groups, including the Beef Council, Dairy Council, Pork Producers and USU Extension prepare presentations.
"By the time they are out of here, they've learned a little bit about all the commodities that have to do with agriculture," Bills says.
Bills says it's a success if the kids go away with more knowledge and appreciation for how a farm contributes to their lives.
