SANDY — A man died Thursday after he was hit while riding his bicycle on Wednesday, according to police.

On Wednesday, around 10:15 p.m., police responded to the crash at 400 E. 10600 South.

A 55-year-old man, Melvin "Kent" Barnes, had been attempting to cross the street with his bicycle when he was hit by a vehicle driven by a 27-year-old woman, according to Sandy Police Sgt. Michael Olsen. Barnes was hospitalized due to the injuries sustained in the collision.

Dan Pessetto, Barnes' brother-in-law, told KSL that Barnes had spent the night in the shock trauma unit before he died. Pessetto said his family was not "crying foul," but they want to know more about the situation.

"We're still grieving," Pessetto said. "We're not ready to hire an attorney; we just want some answers."

The Sandy Police Department requested that the Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office take charge of the investigation after "identifying a conflict of interest," according to a statement from the sheriff's office.
