MIDVALE — Two Midvale men were sentenced, one to jail and the other to prison time, after being charged with beating and pistol-whipping a man in 2016.

On May 15, 2016, Zachary Alan Wood, 26, and Joseph Russell Mikulski, 40, “took turns” punching, kicking, stomping and pistol-whipping another man in the head in an apartment building at 69 W. 8600 South in Midvale, court documents say.

The victim was arguing with his girlfriend. When she began to yell, Wood and Mikulski came downstairs and began to beat the victim, according to court documents.

A witness reported seeing the defendants take turns “kicking and stomping (the man) on his head,” the charges state.

"Mikulski pulled out a black and gray .380 pistol and hit (the man) in the head at least 10 times," court documents say. The victim was then allegedly dragged upstairs and further attacked.

Police rushed the victim to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where a CT scan showed he suffered two spinal fractures, among other serious injuries. A SWAT team later found a safe in the man’s apartment with a handgun and a large amount of methamphetamine, according to court documents.

Wood was sentenced in November 2016 to 270 days in jail as part of a 36-month probation. He was charged in May 2016 with aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury, as well as the purchase, transfer, possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person.

Mikulski was sentenced earlier this month to two concurrent zero-to-five-year prison terms. He was charged in May 2016 with aggravated assault, theft by receiving stolen property, purchase, transfer, possession or use of a firearm by a restricted person and possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute.
