MILLCREEK — A person fell off a steep slope while they were using some heavy equipment at a home in Millcreek on Wednesday, prompting a complex rescue operation after the equipment ended up on top of them.

The incident took place just after 1:30 p.m. near 4600 South and Wasatch Boulevard, according to the Unified Fire Authority.

The person was using some heavy equipment to do some tree removal work at a home when the equipment fell down a slope that was 45-50 degrees, Unified fire spokesman Patrick Costin said. The person got trapped at the bottom of the slope, and the equipment landed on top of them.

Three crews responded to the scene and had to set up multiple airbags and a winch system to get the equipment off of the person, Costin said. It was a complex, technical rescue that took just under 90 minutes.

"All the firefighters were great," Costin said.

The person was conscious, alert and was talking with emergency personnel throughout the entire rescue operation, Costin said. They suffered serious injuries and were taken to a hospital for further treatment, but had stabilized by the time they were transported.

"Fortunately the patient wasn't hurt worse," he said.

Costin didn't provide the identity, age or gender of the person who was trapped.
