PINTURA, Washington County — An Ogden woman is dead and another is in critical condition after their car rolled off the freeway Thursday.
The driver, 19-year-old Angel Stringfellow, was headed south on I-15 in a Honda Civic and attempted to pass a bus about 2:40 p.m., the Utah Highway Patrol reported. As the car passed the bus, the driver lost control and the car slid off an embankment north of Pintura.
The Civic rolled down the embankment and hit a juniper tree. Stringfellow and her 19-year-old female passenger, who were not wearing seat belts, were both thrown from the car.
Stringfellow was pronounced dead at the scene, and the second woman was taken by medical helicopter in critical condition to Dixie Regional Medical Center.
Investigators believe poor tires on the car and speed, while not excessive, may have contributed to the crash.
A UHP spokesman emphasized the need for seat belts, which could have prevented Stringfellow's death in the crash.
