HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii's flagship Manoa campus is included in a list of 55 colleges and universities under investigation for possible violations over handling of sex abuse complaints.

The U.S. Education Department released the names Thursday, two days after a White House task force promised greater government transparency on sexual assault in higher education.

The department says Hawaii's investigation began May 28.

University spokeswoman Diane Chang says the investigation isn't related to a specific incident. She characterizes it as a compliance audit.

Chang says investigators from the department's Office for Civil Rights visited the campus this week.

Title IX prohibits gender discrimination at schools that receive federal funds. It regulates institutions' handling of sexual violence and increasingly is being used by victims who say their school failed to protect them.
