CANONSBURG, Pa. (AP) — Teachers in one of western Pennsylvania's most affluent school districts are on strike.

Classes were canceled Wednesday and a union representative says teachers in the Peters Township School District are prepared to strike for 21 days until Nov. 25.

Talks between the district and the teachers' union broke down after more than seven hours Tuesday night. Talks began at 4 p.m. and ended at around 11:30 p.m.

The teachers' contract expired Aug. 31 and they voted on Sept. 16 to authorize an Oct. 28 strike if a contract could not be reached. The sides remain split over issues including salaries, class size and the length of work days.

Salaries range from $45,900 for first-year teachers up to $104,000 for teachers with at least 17 years' experience and a master's degree.
