DRAPER, Utah (AP) — State officials are launching an initiative that will allow prison inmates to be released early after finishing programs shown to reduce recidivism.
The Deseret News reports (http://bit.ly/1iLp3nQ ) that under the Justice Reinvestment Initiative, which takes effect Thursday, inmates sentenced on or after Oct. 1 could be released at least four months early.
The early release is dependent upon inmates' completion of programs, which include education, vocational training, substance abuse treatment and sex offender treatment. The inmates can be released eight months early if they complete two programs.
Death row inmates and those serving life sentences without parole as well as inmates already in prison are ineligible for the time cuts.
The initiative is part of a state effort to reform Utah's criminal justice system.
