SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — A judge's order has halted plans by teachers in a northeastern Pennsylvania school district to strike on the first day of school.
The Scranton Area School District had planned a walkout on Thursday, when classes are scheduled to begin in the Lackawanna County district.
The (Scranton) Times-Tribune (http://bit.ly/1JMIebj ) reports that Judge Robert Mazzoni on Wednesday granted a temporary injunction blocking the strike.
The district has requested a fact-finding process under which a state-appointed arbitrator will hear from both sides and make a recommendation.
Union president Rosemary Boland said that process could take up to 60 days.
The old contract covering teachers expired Monday, and the union says the two sides are divided on salary and benefits such as health care as well as other issues such as class size.
