TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (AP) — The Cherokee Nation has given $4 million to preserve and renovate a 126-year-old hall on the campus of Northeastern State University.
The Tahlequah-based tribe announced the gift on Wednesday for the school's Seminary Hall. The historic building currently houses the College of Liberal Arts administration, faculty and classrooms, and serves more than 1,700 students.
But school officials say the building is in need of upkeep and needs to be equipped with modern technology. The renovated hall will become a multipurpose building and house a museum, among other features.
The Cherokee Nation is one of the country's largest American Indian tribes, with 320,000 members.
