RENO, Nev. (AP) — Republican Mark Hutchison has joined Gov. Brian Sandoval in the winner's circle by defeating Democrat Lucy Flores for lieutenant governor.

The state senator and lawyer from Las Vegas was Sandoval's hand-picked choice for the job a step away from the governor's mansion. Hutchison could end up there sooner than later if GOP leaders persuade Sandoval to leave midterm to challenge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2016.

Reid rallied support for Flores, a state assemblywoman from Las Vegas who was a juvenile offender before she graduated from the UNLV law school.

Hutchison ran as a team with the popular governor. His $2.4 million campaign war chest was four times bigger than his opponent's.
