ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — The student sexual misconduct policy at the University of Michigan is being updated to expand definitions of unwanted conduct to include gender-based harassment and stalking.
The revised policy takes effect July 1.
It also defines responsible employees and their obligations for sharing information about suspected sexual assault, sexual or gender-based harassment, intimate partner violence and stalking with the university.
University President Mark Schlissel said Wednesday on the school's website that the goal of the changes "is to diminish the frequency of sexual misconduct, encourage those who have been subject to misconduct to come forward, to investigate complaints efficiently and fairly, and to render decisions" that make the campus as safe as possible.
The U.S. Education Department has been investigating how dozens of schools nationwide address sexual abuse allegations.
