SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah lawmakers are considering changes to how clean fuel vehicles are allowed to use express lanes on some freeways.
KSL-TV reports (http://bit.ly/28JxlKT ) that currently the Utah Department of Transportation issues decals to qualifying vehicles on a first-come, first-serve basis, but some are questioning whether there should be a more organized system.
UDOT Legislative and Policy Issues Director Linda Hull says some policymakers have suggested giving priority to drivers with lower emissions or better fuel efficiency. Hull says such a system would be challenging to administer.
Hull says the agency issues a maximum of 6,650 decals statewide and has a waiting list of 135, with 65 applicants expected to become decal holders this year as people drop out of the program.
